Diagnosing the Disorder

Attention Deficit Disorder, or ADD/ADHD, is a psychological term currently applied to anyone who meets the DSM IV diagnostic criteria for impulsivity, hyperactivity and/or inattention.( http://borntoexplore.org/whatisadd.htm) I have heard of kids being diagnosed as early as 3 years of age, but I wanted to know what age children were typically diagnosed with the disorder. I found in a report released in the March issue of Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine that approximately 7.5% of school-aged children in the world have been diagnosed with ADD. (http://www.additudemag.com/adhd/article/688.html) I have always wondered what age ADD can actually be diagnosed because young children are typically energetic and show the symptoms of ADD, but it’s not ADD it’s just how kids are at that age. Also, what the effects, positive and negative, include when taking ADD medications are and what are the different types of medication.
